Unique Lithophyllum Vase | Marina Collection | Handcrafted Ceramic

ENG: Part of my Marina Collection, the 'Lithophyllum' vase is inspired by Sardinia’s pristine limestone cliffs and the red algae that thrive on them. The name Lithophyllum comes from Greek words 'lithos' (stone) and 'phyllon' (leaf), reflecting how these algae cling to rocky surfaces, like leaves anchored to stone. The upper half of the vase features a deep reddish-brown glaze with a glossy finish. The glaze shifts subtly in tone, catching light in ways that bring out natural variations found in algae-covered rocks. I carefully shaped the neck to fold inward like fabric caught in motion, evoking the gentle movement of algae swaying beneath the waves. In contrast, the lower half was coated in white refractory clay with a rough, chalky texture to mirror Sardinia’s weathered limestone shores. I applied this by hand to create a tactile surface that contrasts with the smooth glaze above—inviting you to explore with both your eyes and your hands, just as you would when running your fingers over sun-warmed stones by the sea. The base underwent the same glazing process as the top, featuring a rich reddish-brown finish. A small crack formed during firing—an accidental yet beautiful imperfection that adds character without compromising functionality. The shape of this crack reminds me of a seagull soaring across the horizon, adding a poetic touch that celebrates both nature and the unpredictability of handmade craftsmanship. ITA: Il vaso 'Lithophyllum', parte della mia Collezione Marina, si ispira alle scogliere calcaree incontaminate della Sardegna e alle alghe rosse che le popolano. Il nome, dal greco 'lithos' (pietra) e 'phyllon' (foglia), riflette il modo in cui queste alghe si aggrappano alle rocce, come foglie ancorate alla pietra. La metà superiore del vaso è caratterizzata da un lucido smalto rosso-bruno profondo. Le sue sfumature catturano la luce, riproducendo le variazioni naturali delle rocce ricoperte di alghe. Il collo del vaso, plasmato con cura, si ripiega su se stesso come un tessuto mosso dal vento, richiamando il delicato movimento delle alghe cullate dalle onde. In contrasto, la parte inferiore è stata rivestita di argilla refrattaria bianca, applicata a mano per ottenere una superficie ruvida e gessosa che richiama le coste calcaree sarde. Questo invita a esplorare il vaso non solo con gli occhi, ma anche con le mani, come quando si accarezzano i sassi riscaldati dal sole in riva al mare. La base presenta lo stesso smalto della parte superiore. Durante la cottura si è formata una piccola crepa, un'imperfezione che aggiunge carattere all’oggetto senza comprometterne la funzionalità. La forma di questa crepa mi ricorda un gabbiano in volo, un tocco poetico che celebra l’essenza e l'imprevedibilità dell’artigianato.
