Unique Decorative Red Poppy Plate | Raku Ware | Handcrafted Ceramic

ENG: I wheel-threw this plate using white refractory clay with chamotte 0.5 (finely ground fired clay that adds strength and texture), creating a piece with a subtly textured surface. The design features a coral-red poppy with four distinct petals, set against a background where metallic copper and gold glazes create an almost cosmic effect. At the centre, a silver-blue spiral adds depth and movement to the composition. This piece was created using the raku technique—after the first firing at 980°C, I applied special glazes and fired it again at 950°C in my gas kiln. When the piece reached peak temperature, I removed it from the kiln and placed it in a reduction chamber, where smoke and flame transformed the glazes into rich metallic hues and created a natural fissure—a characteristic feature of raku pottery that adds authenticity to the plate. The wide rim features an interplay between turquoise accents and metallic patina, with colours that shift from deep bronzes to ethereal blues depending on the light. This is purely a decorative piece, not suitable for food service, but perfect as a focal point whether mounted on a wall or displayed as a centrepiece. Each raku firing creates a one-of-a-kind piece through the interaction of fire, smoke, and glaze. ITA: Ho realizzato questo piatto al tornio utilizzando argilla refrattaria bianca con chamotte 0.5 (argilla cotta finemente macinata che conferisce maggiore resistenza e una grana particolare), creando un pezzo dalla superficie leggermente ruvida al tatto. Il piatto presenta un papavero rosso corallo con quattro petali, su uno sfondo dove gli smalti metallici rame e oro creano un effetto quasi cosmico. Al centro, una spirale argento-blu aggiunge profondità e movimento alla composizione. Questo pezzo è stato creato con la tecnica raku: dopo la prima cottura a 980°C, ho applicato smalti speciali e l’ho cotto nuovamente a 950°C nel mio forno a gas. Quando il pezzo ha raggiunto la temperatura massima, l’ho estratto dal forno e posizionato in un contenitore di riduzione, dove fumo e fiamme hanno trasformato gli smalti in ricche tonalità metalliche e creato una crepa naturale: caratteristica tipica della ceramica raku che conferisce autenticità al piatto. L’ampio bordo mostra un gioco tra accenti turchesi e patina metallica, con colori che variano dal bronzo profondo a blu etereo a seconda della luce. Questo è un pezzo puramente decorativo, non adatto al contatto con gli alimenti, ma perfetto come elemento d’arredo sia appeso alla parete che esposto come centrotavola. Ogni cottura raku crea un pezzo unico grazie all’interazione tra fuoco, fumo e smalto.
